  • Rules from the BABY’s Book on Becoming a Billionaire

    • Rule #55: When given a chance to be king or rich, pick rich. You can always buy one of those European kingdoms cheaply on eBay complete with a crest of arms and a moat.

    • Rule #22: Satisfying your own need may be the seed of a real business.

  • Innovate and incubate: With more than one new technology company starting each day, San Diego is becoming the research and development feeder system for corporate America, according to Duane Roth of CONNECT.

  • Solving the proprietary puzzle. In our Ask the Expert segment, LevitZacks’ tax counsel Randy Munyon advises listeners to start early in choosing the best corporate structure for their businesses.

  • Creativity calisthenics: Improve your creative fitness by challenging your brain regularly. Blogger Jennifer Groover shares her methods for exercising your inventive side and balancing your life.

  • When the crown slips and the shoes no longer fit. The number of technology entrepreneurs who remain as CEOs for their start-ups is extremely low. Harvard Business School professor, Noam Wasserman, explains why.

  • Straight talk on curls. This week’s "I wish I’d thought of that idea" idea highlights www.naturallycurly.com, a unique web site celebrating naturally curly hair that’s gaining attention from angel investors.

Duane J. Roth is the CEO of CONNECT which is recognized globally for its efforts in fostering entrepreneurship in the San Diego region by catalyzing, accelerating, and supporting the growth of the most promising technology and life sciences businesses. Focused on assisting start-up companies in the San Diego region, CONNECT has been directly involved with over 1,000 companies since its inception in 1985.

Prior to joining CONNECT, Roth founded Alliance Pharmaceutical Corp. where he still serves as Chairman of the Board. Prior to founding Alliance, Roth held senior management positions at American Home Products (now Wyeth) and Johnson & Johnson operating companies. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors and executive committees of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), the California Healthcare Institute (CHI), and BIOCOM (past Chair). Roth is active in the San Diego community, serving on the board of the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation (past Chair), the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Lincoln Club of San Diego (past Chair), the San Diego State University College of Business (past Chair), and as co-Chair of the Regional Housing Task Force on Affordable Housing. Roth is a member of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s California Commission For Jobs and Economic Growth.

Randy Munyon is Tax Counsel at LevitZacks, Certified Public Accountants, San Diego. His professional affiliations include membership in the Tax Section, State Bar of California; Tax Section and Multidisciplinary Practice Committee, San Diego County Bar Association; and the Hispanic National Bar Association. He is also Chair, Local Board 182, Selective Service System of the United States. Honors include the Wiley W. Manuel Award for Pro Bono Legal Services, California State Bar, 1994 and 1996.

Jennifer Groover blogs on creativity for Success Magazine. She is the developer of the Butler Bag, just one of the ten patents and eight trademarks held by her company, Jen Groover Production LLC. A harried mother of twin baby girls at this point in her life, Groover turned a moment of panic - digging for a credit card in a messy purse in a busy store while balancing a screaming baby on each hip - into a moment of inspiration: the creation of the Butler Bag, a sleek, stylish, and compartmentalized handbag that offers women both form and function.
